Want the Best Person for the Job?

Want the best person for the job? It pays to ask the right questions!

Recruiting quality people is a difficult and costly task. However, getting it wrong can be even more costly. Through asking smart, strategic questions, encouraging a conversational dialogue and looking for promising signs in their answers, you are likely to have more success in your recruitment drive. It pays dividends to plan for the interviews you’ll be conducting. Be clear about the critical capabilities the candidate must demonstrate and what traits or experience is likely to set a candidate apart.

Have a think about incorporating the following in your next interview;

Icebreakers

Interviews are nerve racking experiences for many so it is important to put the candidate at ease.  This will not only allow them to put their best foot forward, but will allow you to understand clear examples of how they may perform in your business. Starting the interview process with general questions allows both parties to gather their thoughts and begin the interview with a clear mind.

Interests

What are the key areas of interest to the candidate? What makes them tick?  Asking questions which highlight ways candidates become and stay motivated and what is required for them to have value at work, enables you to see more clearly if they will fit within your organisation.  It will also provide you with an understanding on how to drive their performance and get the best from them in the position you have advertised.

Collaboration

One of the most in demand soft skills required today is the ability to work with people. This could be with clients, customers but also internally within teams.  Teamwork and how people collaborate can have significant impacts on your business. Asking questions which allow you to understand the candidate’s people skills can reveal a lot about their experience and maturity in the workplace.  Depending on your business and team culture, focusing on these soft skills will provide you with significant insight into how the candidate will fit into your organisation.

Communication

It is important to understand candidate’s communication skills and how they explain concepts and their experience during the interview. Candidates who are concise, clear and effective in their communication clearly show that they can convey ideas and communicate to all stakeholders in an appropriate manner. It is also important to understand how the candidate communicates in difficult situations or how they handle themselves when needing to influence other people.
