Our Veterans’ Employment Commitment

The term ‘veteran’ is defined as ‘a person who is serving or has served in the ADF’.

As at 30 June 2018, DVA estimated that there were around 641,000 living Australian veterans who have ever served in the ADF, either full time or in the reserves.

Each year there are over 5,000 veterans returning to civilian life who bring with them a wide range of skills suitable for a variety of industries and job roles. The ADF invests heavily in training its service men and women meaning when they leave the ADF, veterans have a broad range of skills and experience to offer their next employer.

Our organisation recognises the value and unique experience of our veterans and encourages employment opportunities for those who have served our country.

Regardless of their role within the Defence Force, many former Defence personnel hold skills that are easily transferrable including:

  • Leadership/Coaching/Mentoring
  • Resilience
  • Agility
  • Strategic mindset
  • Communication
  • Problem Solving
  • Quick thinking
  • Team work
  • Dependability
  • Flexibility
  • Conflict Resolution, and much, much more

We know that secure employment is associated with positive health outcomes and a better quality of life – for everyone, including veterans. That is why we have joined the growing number of Australian organisations that recognise the skills and experience of veterans. As a company, we have made a public declaration to The Veterans’ Employment Commitment showing our support for greater employment opportunities for veterans.

Our commitment by way of this declaration shows that we value the significant skills and experience Australian veterans have to offer and declare to:

  • recognise the skills and value that veterans can bring
  • support the employment of veterans, ensuring that veterans have equal opportunity in gaining employment
  • provide career opportunities to veterans
  • actively seek to understand how veterans’ skills and experience can translate into civilian skills
  • provide suitable training, mentoring and coaching to veterans to assist their integration into a new role
  • ensure your human resource policies equitably support the recruitment and retention of all employees, including veterans.
