Is Your Recruitment Process Screening Out Talent You Want to Pull in?

It today’s employment market, it can be difficult to find the right fit for the role you need to fill. Promoting the role and using accurate information is paramount to receiving quality candidates.

Throughout the hiring process, discrimination can occur – even without you knowing. There are many things to be aware of when hiring for a role. One of them being. Homophily is the tendency of individuals to associate and bond with similar others, such as recruiting someone like the previous staff member who filled that role. For example, if the previous staff member was a positive contributing member to the team, then you would look for someone similar to fill the role. Thinking they would be as good as the previous staff member. This of course is not always the case and you could make a bad hiring decision.

To prevent this, look at the role separate to the person. Focus on skill set and capabilities as well as cultural fit and bring in a second opinion from a separate team. This will assist in the recruitment process and offer an alternative opinion.  If you are still unsure, request a second interview.  It is also beneficial to call their referees and ask about previous performance. Their referees can provide clarity around previous performance and ability.  This could provide you with the clarification you need to decide.

There are many ways to attract great talent. Ensuring your organisation is aware of the necessary tools to recruit, retain and enhance the employee experience is one of them.
