How to Get the Job of Your Dreams

Do you foresee a clear path towards the career you want? Perhaps you are still not sure, and you are exploring options? Getting the job of your dream can be easier that you think – you just need to get the basics right.

Whilst many of us had grand dreams of becoming astronauts or policemen as a kid, it is only a rare few who know what they want to do with their career from a young age and follow that through their career lifetime. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average worker currently holds ten different jobs before age forty, and this number is projected to grow.

So, how do you get the job of your dreams?

Plan

Like with anything in life, a good plan to keep you on track will be one of the key pillars of securing your dream job. To start a plan, you need to ask yourself the following questions;

  • Do you know the type of organisation you wish to work for?
  • Are you aware of the type of skills you need?
  • What sector/industry are you keen to be involved in?
  • What are your values?

Once you know these four key pillars, write them down. From here you can pull together a one-page document outlining exactly what you are looking for and be able to identify what you need to change or implement to become hireable to your employer of choice.

Research

Once you have your plan, start your research. Researching the industry and looking into the types of businesses operating in that sector will give you some great insight into how big the opportunity is. Then drill down further and research what roles those companies have and if the roles are attractive to you. Ensure you take your values into consideration. What are these companies like? Do their values align with yours? Will you be happy being a part of their team?

Upskill/reskill and don’t forget transferrable skills

If you have an existing experience in the industry that you are interested in – that is great! But if not, don’t be concerned. Write a list of all your amazing skills and attributes. Many of the skill we gather through our career are often transferrable and through these you can showcase how you may tackle your new role.

If there are specific technical skills you need that will help you get the job of your dreams, then identify what these are and investigate ways you could obtain them. This may be looking at further education or short course options, through to offering to volunteer in the industry to get that experience you need for the role.

Connect

Build your network of people who are currently in the job or field that you want to be in. Search for them on LinkedIn and make a connection, and reach out to have a discussion. Connect with people at networking events, talk to people at industry events, talk with family and friends to gauge if they know anyone working in your field of interest that they can connect you to. Reach out to the manager of the team you would like to work in and ask to take them for a coffee to pick their brain.

Whatever you do to build you network of people in the field you wish to be in will benefit you in getting to your dream job.

Getting the job of your dream may not happen quickly, but if you implement our key steps above you will be in with a great chance of getting a role. Don’t forget that we are here to help reach out to our team today.
