Future Proof Your Hiring Decisions with These Key Questions

Interview outcomes can sometimes be based on the hiring managers gut feel or intuition. But to make an informed decision that will benefit your business you also need to ensure you extract information that will assist you in your decision-making process.

There are a variety of questions to ask candidates when you meet with them. It is important not to get caught up in asking questions that allow for a superficial assessment of the candidate’s capabilities. Clear, concise questions tailored to the role and your business will be able to generate answers that will prove the candidates worth and abilities.

Adaptability

Having a team who are great at tackling hard problems, can provide creative solutions and have effective approaches to workplace decision making, are the forefront of the strongest companies.

Candidates who show their ability to adapt and have strong problem-solving skills are going to be an asset for you and your team. Asking questions which highlight their abilities and gives them an opportunity to identify their skill set in this area, allows you to really drill down into how they can benefit your organisation.

Cultural Fit

There is much said about finding a candidate that fits within your culture. In many ways skills can be taught but how the employee fits within the existing team or department is paramount to making a great hire. If there is conflict in your team, it can impair not only team success but also overall business success – which is not the outcome anyone wishes for.

Questions relating to teamwork and what they enjoy most about working in a team will provide a small insight into how they may fit within your team. You could also ask a second team member to sit in on interviews to gain their insights into the candidates to provide alternative feedback.

Initiative

Candidates with entrepreneurial spirit are great additions to your team. They are often self-driven and actively seek opportunities to look at new ways of doing things to make positive change. These candidates are those who have ideas and a hunger for work which allows them to try new initiatives within the organisation. Asking questions of candidates during the interview process which brings out their entrepreneurial spirit is paramount to making the right hire.

It’s tough to assess job competency in an interview. Additionally, it’s easy to be blinded by personal biases. Everyone wants to work with someone whom they like and have things in common with, but sometimes such a person may not be the best fit for the job.
